On August 17, 2024, Indonesia celebrates its 79th Independence Day, a historic moment that serves as a reminder of the struggle and sacrifice of the heroes who fought for freedom. This celebration is not merely a ceremonial event but also a reflection on the progress and challenges the nation faces, especially in the development of human capital as the most valuable resource. Human resource management (HRM) plays a crucial role in advancing the nation, particularly in the current era of globalization and digitalization.

Human capital development has become a primary focus in the efforts of both the government and the private sector to enhance the nation's competitiveness. This is evident in various policies aimed at improving education quality, skills development, and the welfare of the workforce. This Independence Day serves as a timely opportunity to evaluate and strengthen these efforts so that Indonesia can compete on the international stage. In the context of HRM, several key aspects need attention.

First, improving the quality of education and training. Quality education is the foundation for building a competent workforce. In today's digital age, the ability to adapt to new technologies is crucial. Therefore, education and training relevant to industry needs are priorities to ensure that Indonesia's workforce can compete globally.

Second, talent management. Indonesia has a large population with diverse potential. Effective talent management can help identify, develop, and retain talented individuals who can significantly contribute to national development. In this context, it is essential to create a work environment that supports innovation and creativity while providing fair opportunities for every individual to grow.

Third, the management of welfare and job satisfaction. A healthy workforce, both physically and mentally, is a valuable asset. The welfare of workers should be a primary concern in HRM. This includes efforts to create a balance between work and personal life, as well as providing a safe and comfortable work environment. Additionally, job satisfaction should be addressed, as satisfied employees tend to be more productive and loyal to the company.

Fourth, strengthening nationalist values in the workplace. The spirit of nationalism instilled by the heroes of independence must be maintained and applied in the workplace. Values such as integrity, hard work, and mutual cooperation should be integral parts of organizational culture. Thus, Indonesian human resources will not only be technically competent but also possess strong character and integrity.

As Indonesia enters its 79th year of independence, the challenges it faces are increasingly complex, particularly in an era marked by rapid changes and intensifying global competition. Effective HRM is one of the solutions to address these challenges. By focusing on improving education quality, talent management, welfare, and the reinforcement of national values, Indonesia can strengthen its competitiveness and achieve sustainable progress.

The spirit of independence that we commemorate each year should inspire continuous innovation and contribution to national development. Superior human resource management is key to realizing the ideals of independence, namely creating a just, prosperous, and affluent society. With competent and character-driven human resources, a brighter future for Indonesia will be realized.
