Lack of Literacy in Indonesia

1.1 Abstract

The problem discussed in this article is about the lack of literacy in Indonesia. What will be discussed is the meaning of the word Literacy, then the importance of literacy, the impact of lack of literacy, the causes, solutions to solve the problem and so on.

1.2 Introduction

Literacy comes from the Latin term 'literature' and the English term 'letter'. Literacy is the quality or ability to be literate, which includes the ability to read and write. But more than that, the meaning of literacy has another meaning, which includes visual literacy, which means the ability to recognize and understand ideas conveyed visually, be it through videos or images.

1.3 Discussion

1.3.1 The Importance of Literacy

Literacy skills are very important, especially for the younger generation. The more literature that is read, the more knowledge and open new horizons. Literacy skills are not only very important but also very much needed, especially in the current era. Because the development of science and technology and information communication is very fast.

1.3.2 Impact of Lack of Literacy

The negative impact of a lack of literacy is not small, there are several impacts of a lack of literacy, namely: (1) Many young people become lazy individuals, (2) Lack of insight for someone who lacks literacy because they are unable to compete with other regions and even outside countries, (3) It is difficult to get a job because they don't have much insight, (4) For the younger generation, it will be difficult and even unable to develop the potential that exists within them because of the lack of insight.

1.3.3 Causes of Low Literacy in Indonesia

There are several reasons why Indonesia has low literacy, some of which are: (1) Lack of reading materials and inappropriate literacy practices, (2) Low interest in reading, compared to other countries. Indonesia ranks in the bottom 10 countries with low literacy levels. Indonesia ranks 62nd out of 70 countries.

1.3.4 Tips to Improve Literacy

The low literacy of our country greatly affects the quality of the Indonesian nation, because with low literacy, we cannot know and keep up with the development of science and information in this world. Some ways that can be done are:

1.3.4.1 Generating Reading Intention

People who are lazy to read because of a lack of intention or desire do not even exist at all, giving rise to laziness. Therefore, grow a serious intention and instill in your heart that books are a storehouse of knowledge.

1.3.4.2 Make a List of Books You Want to Read

When someone who already has a serious and strong intention, then the next step is to make a reading list that you want to read. Try to find readings that make yourself comfortable when reading them and of course there are insights gained from the reading.

1.3.4.3 Taking Important Points From the Book Read

Writing important things after reading indirectly means that we repeat the memory of what we read and understand from the book. This is one of the methods so that the book previously read is remembered in the brain.

1.3.4.4 Reading at the Right Time

Finding an effective time to read is no less important than the previous points. The brain can work properly so that it is easier to understand the contents of the book being read.

1.3.4.5 Consistency

Try to be consistent in reading books. All actions will not feel the impact if not done consistently, therefore try to do it repeatedly so that it is consistent in reading books.

1.4 Conclusion

Literacy in short is the ability to read and write. Literacy has a very important role in human life. There are so many ways that can be done to improve the quality of literacy within each person. There are also negative impacts if you do not have the desire to improve the quality of literacy. It takes high awareness to increase interest in reading, one of which is consistency. If someone already has a strong intention, he should carry out his intention seriously, so that he becomes a person who has high quality.
