The Influence of Slang on Languange Development for High School Adolescents

A) Introduction

Language development among today's teenagers is fairly advanced, today's teenagers are familiar with a lot of slang. But the slang they often use is usually obtained from social media which is not certain that they know the meaning behind the words or sentences they often say. The existence of slang can usually make today's teenagers behave inappropriately or commonly called lack of manners. The development of slang can make gen z teenagers forget their local language or dialect. They prefer to use slang because they think slang is a language that makes them cool and not out of date.

B) Research Results

     From the observation of the interview with Mr. Erik Michael Karwur at SMA 04 Gorontalo. The researcher got the following results:

1. The slang that is often used by teenagers today can have an impact on the civilization they have, usually there are some children who no longer have the manners of speaking because they are more often using slang both with friends, parents or teachers in the neighborhood. The existence of today's slang also makes parents have their own concerns because by often using slang without knowing the meaning behind sentences and words will be able to make teenagers feel awkward or feel bullied.

2. In addition to having a bad impact on slang, it also has advantages for Gen Z, with the development of slang Gen Z will have a lot of vocabulary that they can say and can also add to the broad social awareness, and Gen Z will continue to be updated about phenomena or events that occur.

3. Gen Z uses more slang and mixed language, or you could say with the existence of slang. Gen Z can forget the regional languages and dialects of their home regions.

4. Explaining more about the use of good and correct slang to Gen Z can reduce the potential for bullying among teenagers. Because by learning and understanding the meaning of slang words or sentences can make gen z pay more attention to the words they will later say.
