Psychology of Communication: Connecting Psychological Principles and Human Interaction Dynamics in the Modern Era

The psychology of communication integrates two disciplines, psychology and communication, to understand the dynamics of interpersonal interactions. Using psychological theories, it explains how individuals process information, convey messages, and respond to social stimuli. With the rapid advancement of digital technology and social media, understanding communication psychology becomes crucial for enhancing communication effectiveness and fostering meaningful relationships.

Basic Concepts of Communication Psychology

Communication psychology studies various aspects of human behavior affecting communication. According to Rakhmat (2007), it focuses on understanding individual behavior in social contexts, including how people perceive, interpret, and respond to stimuli. In communication, factors like perception, memory, and thought patterns significantly influence interaction quality.

Rakhmat further explains that communication is not merely about delivering messages but also involves internal processes within individuals. For example, when hearing a message, one doesn't just passively receive information but processes it based on personal experiences, emotions, and values. Understanding these psychological processes can help individuals become more effective communicators (Rakhmat, 2007).

The Role of Emotion in Communication

Emotion is a key factor influencing communication success. Positive emotions like happiness or enthusiasm facilitate better reception of messages, while negative emotions like anger or anxiety can hinder effective communication.

Fazira (2022) highlights that emotions also shape interpersonal relationships. Positive emotions strengthen bonds, while negative emotions often cause conflict or miscommunication. In communication psychology, the ability to recognize and manage both one's own and others' emotions---known as emotional intelligence---is essential for improving communication quality (Fazira, 2022).

Communication Psychology and Mental Health

A significant contribution of communication psychology is its role in supporting mental health. Poor communication often leads to stress and conflict, adversely affecting psychological well-being. Conversely, healthy communication helps individuals feel valued, understood, and supported.

Putri (2021) suggests that communication can be a tool to rebuild self-confidence, especially for individuals facing identity crises, such as college students experiencing a quarter-life crisis. By adopting appropriate psychological approaches, these students can improve interpersonal communication skills, enabling them to adapt to challenges (Putri, 2021).
