As far as summer accessories go, the glorious sun hat is by far the most misunderstood. But if you give it a chance, you’ll soon realize that there’s really no reason for sun hat hatred–they’re actually pretty freaking awesome.
Sure, the sun hat has a bit of a reputation as an old person hat. It’s the hat your mom wears while gardening. It’s the hat your grandma wears during her Thursday power walk carrying her two pound weights. Your weir uncle always wears one with a chin strap. I get it. You know a lot of geriatric types who wear sun hats. But that hardly means that a young hot thing like yourself can’t make a sun hat seem extremely current and on trend.

I’m going to say something pretty revolutionary here (because I’m one big rebel). Sun hats are the best summer head accessory (followed by baseball caps featuring the Los Angeles Lakers logo). In addition to the style benefits (they’ll spice up your t-shirt and jeans combo and cover your greasy hair), they also offer a slew of beauty related health benefits. You all know what a nut I am about sun protection, but rarely do we talk about covering up that scalp of yours. Your scalp is basically the a sitting duck when it comes to sun damage, so give that thing a sunhat.

A sun hat is pretty easy to pull off (just look at this celebrity inspiration) if you follow a few simple rules:

1. You can always branch out from the style of sun hat your grandma wears.
Beyoncé‘s patterned cutouts keep this straw hat from veering into garden hobbyist territory.

2. Contrast your hat tone to avoid one big monochromatic head monster.

3. You can keep things from going too Coachella-y by trying a black sun hat.

Nina Agdal‘s hat doesn’t look like it’d be out of place in New York City, as opposed to the California music festival look we’re used to.

4. Don’t be afraid to pair the sun hat with a tailored look–it’s not all maxi dresses or hiking shorts.

Olivia Wilde nailed it with a structured blazer and skinny jeans, which offsets the sometimes hippie-ish vibe that sun hats give off.

5. Go for a unique texture
