As a 23-year-old student from Papua New Guinea (PNG), pursuing International Relations (IR) at UNIMUDA Sorong has been a rewarding and transformative journey. Coming from a small island nation that often feels far from the centres of global power, I was drawn to IR because I wanted to understand how the world works---how countries interact, how international decisions affect us, and how PNG fits into the global system. Now that I am actively studying IR, I can confidently say that this field has opened my eyes to the complex web of connections, challenges, and opportunities that shape our modern world.

At its core, International Relations is the study of interactions between states, international organizations, and other global actors. It examines how diplomacy, trade, security, and cooperation contribute to peace and stability, but also how conflicts and power struggles can disrupt these relations. IR goes beyond just politics---it encompasses economics, culture, law, and environmental issues, offering insights into how global events impact both powerful and small nations. As a PNG student, this knowledge has given me a deeper understanding of global dynamics, helping me see how events that seem distant---like trade wars or climate summits---can have direct effects on my home country.

One of the key lessons I've learned is the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy. In an interconnected world, no country can address major issues---such as climate change, human rights, public health crises, or global security---on its own. This understanding has made me appreciate PNG's role in the Pacific region and on the global stage. Our participation in regional organizations like the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and global forums like the United Nations is essential for ensuring that our voice is heard in important international discussions.

IR has also enabled me to critically analyse foreign policies, trade agreements, and power dynamics that shape global relationships. For example, understanding the growing influence of China in the Pacific or the strategic role of Australia in our region allows me to better grasp the challenges and opportunities PNG faces. This insight is especially important because it helps me think about how PNG can navigate these relationships effectively, protecting our national interests while contributing to regional development and cooperation.

One of the most exciting aspects of studying IR at UNIMUDA Sorong is the diverse environment. Learning alongside Indonesian students and others from different backgrounds has enriched my experience, exposing me to new perspectives on regional and global issues. It has made me realize that IR is not just about governments and international organizations---it is also about people. The connections I am making with fellow students and lecturers are helping me build a global mindset, which I believe will benefit me both personally and professionally.

I am deeply grateful to be studying IR at UNIMUDA Sorong. Every lecture and discussion bring new insights that inspire me to keep learning and exploring. I now understand that IR is not just about solving problems but also about finding opportunities for growth and collaboration, even for small nations like PNG. It makes me optimistic about our future and confident that PNG can play a more active role in addressing regional and global challenges.

As the semester progresses, I am excited to delve deeper into topics like global governance, conflict resolution, human security, and foreign policy analysis. I am eager to learn how to apply what I am studying to real-world scenarios, so I can contribute meaningfully to PNG's development and diplomacy efforts in the future. This journey has taught me to think critically, stay curious, and appreciate the interconnectedness of the world.

In conclusion, International Relations is more than just a field of study---it is a way of understanding the world and our place in it. Studying IR at UNIMUDA Sorong has given me a sense of purpose and optimism about the future. I am confident that the knowledge and skills I gain here will empower me to serve PNG and contribute to building a more peaceful, cooperative, and sustainable world.
