"CODE SWITCHING : A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF TEACHER PERSPECTIVES"

Code switching is a language switch in a conversation or interaction, where usually people who use code switching are people who master more than one language. In an educational environment, especially in the teaching process, of course, teachers and students have different language backgrounds. So that sometimes we often find students who do not understand the explanation of material from a teacher who uses formal language or official language commonly used in teaching. Based on this background, this article will discuss how a teacher can make students understand the language used during the learning process? and how the feedback given by students?.

In this study, data was collected by interviewing a teacher at SDN 05 Suwawa, namely Mrs Katrina Eyato S.Pd. The purpose of this interview was to find out how the application of code switching in learning.

From the results of the interview with Mrs Katrina Kadir Eyato S.Pd conducted at SDN 05 Suwawa, where it was explained that in order to be able to make students better understand and understand the material being taught, then I switch the language code in the form of language variants from formal to informal or language that is more familiar used by students.

The use of code switching is a practice that often occurs in the teaching process between my interaction as a teacher and students. With this language code switching, it can help students to more easily understand the material explanation more effectively. So that from my observations, students become more active and this makes learning more interesting because of the positive feedback that students give me. As shown by students who are actively involved in asking questions during the learning process, which shows that I succeeded in making students understand in the teaching process. 'said Mrs Katrina'

However, there were also students who still did not understand when I code-switched in the lesson. Which is shown by students with an attitude of no feedback when I ask, students are just silent and aloof. So based on this, as a teacher, of course I need to approach the student personally, then ask or interact with the student about what is the problem of the student. And after knowing and understanding the student's problem, then a teacher tries to provide an explanation and understanding of the learning material again with an easy one and adjusts to the needs of the student.

Based on the answers from the results of interviews with Mrs Katrina Kadir Eyato S.Pd, we can understand that by applying code switching in the practice of switching language codes in the form of variants from formal language codes to informal language or more familiar to students in the teaching process can help students understand learning more easily. Thus, the use of code-switching can create active and effective learning due to positive feedback such as students being actively involved in asking questions during the learning process. However, it is also important for teachers to realise and approach students if there are students who may still have difficulties in understanding the learning.
