Before knowing these two philosophers, first we need to know Jamaludin Al-Afghani, the teacher of Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal. In 1978, the invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte was the imperialist invaders who brought 500 more scientific figures to conquer Islam. Jamaludin Al-Afghani and Hasan Al-Banna worked together on a political strategy to unite Muslims to fight Napoleon Bonaparte. Until finally came Purification, that is the way of Jamaludin and Hasan so that Muslims would return to the Koran and Hadith without the need to study the yellow book or the previous book. This purification is considered aqidah thought.
The thoughts of Muhammad Abduh and Muhammmad Iqbal are different (contradictory).

Muhammad Abduh's thoughts are not suitable when applied in Indonesia, but Muhammad Iqballah's thoughts that are suitable to be applied in Indonesia. Muhammad Abduh's thoughts should have been about humans so that they would be better in the future. Muhammad Iqbal does not require humans to follow his will, instead he told humans to be artsy. So according to Muhammad Iqbal is an art, not everything must go back to the Koran and the hadiths but also need other references. The thoughts of Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal
