There are various efficient techniques you may use to improve your communication skills in English, but it takes time and practice. Here are some tips you may follow:
1. Â Scroll in English
This could be a way for people who don't enjoy reading for a long period of time. So, what does this mean? As times have changed, people nowadays tend to do everything online. Shopping, consulting, learning, and a lot more. It has become a part of our daily life, scrolling through our mobile phones. Now, if you change your language settings to English, gradually you'll be used to some unfamiliar words. Naturally, every app you access will be in English and you will get used to it.
What you watch also plays an important role in learning a new language, since you're also listening to what they're saying. For example, when you watch an English movie, you're not going to watch it once, but several times.Â
First, you're going to watch it with your native language subtitles. Second, watch it with English subtitles, and lastly, watch it with no subtitles. You may want to watch it with English subtitles a few more times. Also, you can note down phrases/vocabularies you don't understand. This also applies when you watch other English-based videos, it could be from TikTok, Instagram, or any other online platform that could be helpful for learning day-to-day English. I guarantee that you will pick up at least a few unfamiliar phrases.
2. Speak, Speak, Speak
By practicing speaking, you'll get more confident in your speaking. By practicing often, you'll be able to improve faster. It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as you're diligent enough it'll get so much better and we learn from our mistakes anyway, so don't get discouraged when you have a mistake.Â
For those who want to practice speaking as well as public speaking, you could try answering some questions in class when the teacher asks or talking with foreign people online, but you don't always need to speak to someone to practice, you can practice by yourself by looking to the mirror, from learning how to pronounce words, using the right words according to the context, and using the right tones and expression.Â
3. Practice Writing
From what I've seen, a lot of people when learning English are more confident in their writing, compared to speaking. That is where you could try to deepen your skills by writing down new vocabulary or phrases and idioms you've just learned and express yourself through writing. Although this isn't direct communication, as mentioned earlier, times have changed and everything is possible within the grasp of your hands. It doesn't always have to be long paragraphs or anything too complicated, you could start with a simple comment on your friend's or an artist's post and express your opinion towards it.Â
Creating an everyday English book may be an easy and private method to practice writing. Write about whatever that interests you, including your day and your thoughts on it. You'll see progress in your grammar and writing style with time. Try out several writing types, such as narrative, persuasive, informational, or descriptive writing. Doing this variation might increase your writing's ability to adapt. Don't just write about one topic. Write about a variety of things to widen your knowledge and develop your writing skills.
