The Impact Of Usage Informal Language By Students At School

By : Reynaldi Karim; Supervised by : Muziatun, S.Pd, M.App. Ling, PhD

Social and cultural changes among students have led to the increasing use of informal language in the school environment. Students often use informal language, or what is referred to as colloquial language, when communicating with peers and in certain situations with their teachers or school staff. This language is generally comfortable and easy to understand, and has characteristics specific to the region or demographic of its users.

While the use of informal language helps students feel comfortable and build social relationships, overuse and inappropriate use can negatively impact students' ability to understand and use formal language, especially in academic contexts.

The following are the positive and negative impacts of using informal language in the school environment.

Positive Impact :

  • Strengthening relationships between students: Informal language is often used to create a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. This can strengthen relationships between students and create a more enjoyable learning environment.
  • Increasing self-expression: Informal language allows students to express themselves more freely and creatively. They can use slang, slang, or body language to convey their feelings and thoughts.

Negative Impact :

  • Declining quality of Indonesian: Excessive use of informal language can cause students to pay less attention to the use of good and correct Indonesian. This can have an impact on decreasing the ability to write and speak formally.
  • Creating an unprofessional impression: The use of informal language in formal situations, such as presentations or class discussions, can give the impression of being unprofessional and less serious.

The use of formal language in the school environment is very important to build good and professional communication skills in students. By using formal language, students can improve their writing and speaking skills , thus preparing them for formal situations outside of school. In addition, the use of formal language also helps create a more serious and structured learning atmosphere, which encourages students to behave professionally and value good communication. Although informal language can strengthen relationships between students and improve self-expression, formal language remains an important foundation in learning and developing appropriate and ethical language competencies.
