ABSTRACT

WACHID SUGIHARTO: The Effectiveness of Fair Play Rewards in Sportsmanship, Fair Play, and Characters in U12 Soccer Game. Thesis. Yogyakarta: Graduate School, Yogyakarta State University, 2012.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of fair play rewards in sportsmanship, fair play, and characters in the soccer game. Sportsmanship behaviors are indicated by respecting competitor players and referees. Characters are observed through players’ and officials’ cooperative behaviors and honesty in U12 soccer schools (SSs).

This study employed an experimental method using a two-group design, a randomized two-group design, posttest only or posttest only control designs. The research population comprised U12 SSs in Jakarta, Banten, West Java, and Central Java with a sample of 32 U12 SSs. The sample was selected using the purposive sampling technique and it was then randomized to select 16 SSs as a group receiving a treatment of fair play rewards bigger than winning rewards and 16 SSs not receiving a treatment of fair play rewards bigger than winning rewards. The research instruments and data collection techniques included tests, observations, and interviews. The data were analyzed using the t-test at a significance level of 5%.

The conclusions of the study are as follows. (1) There is effectiveness of fair play rewards in the fair play in U12 soccer games in the group of SSs receiving information that fair play rewards are bigger than winning rewards and the group not receiving such information, with tobserved = 3.745 and p = 0.001. (2) There is effectiveness of fair play rewards in the sportsmanship in U12 soccer games in the group of SSs receiving information that fair play rewards are bigger than winning rewards and the group not receiving such information, with tobserved = 2.118 and p = 0.037. (3) There is effectiveness of fair play rewards in the characters in U12 soccer games in the group of SSs receiving information that fair play rewards are bigger than winning rewards and the group not receiving such information, with tobserved = 2.883 and p = 0.007.
