What you think first time when you heard about Miss Universe Competition?? Hmm…mostly all of you will think about a group of many gorgeous women. Well, absolutely that’s correct. Miss universe is an annual international beauty contest run by the Miss Universe Organization. And the contestant is choosing from all over the world including our country Indonesia who has been participating since 1974.
The first representative from Indonesia was Nia Kurniasi Ardikoesoema. Unfortunately, there’s no national title beauty contest at that era. And Indonesia started to held national beauty contest again in 1994, called “Puteri Indonesia” and the winner was Venna Melinda, who is a beautiful and talented Indonesia actress. Nowadays, she has a career as representative government. Moreover, there’s another famous name such as Alya Rohali, Artika Sari Devi, Nadine Chandrawinata, who already experienced in Miss Universe contest.
However, from 1974-2009 Indonesian beauty contestant hasn’t got any chance to be a winner. Have to admit that the competition is very competitive. There are around 83 contestants from the entire world.
This year, Indonesia sent Qory Sandioriva, 19years old, a university student majoring in France literature. Her natural beauty brought her to join the competitive competitions in Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, New York city.
Moreover, according to organizers, participants both at the country level and worldwide, valued not only beauty but also includes their versatility and manners 3B also known as the Brain, Beauty, and Behavior (brain (intelligence), beauty, and behavior). In this event, contestants are chosen to enter the semi-finals is as much as 15 large. However, in 2006, the number of contestants is the 20th person selected.
But there’s a funny things if we take a look backward about the contestant quality itself outside of the performance. From the official website about Miss Universe, I have no idea why such a talented beauty contest couldn’t speak English well when had her interviewed about her own country and just about the other simply question in English.
Also in YouTube video that showing the preliminary round in the Miss Universe 2010 beauty pageant by Miss Indonesia, Qory Sandioriva, apparently reaped harsh criticism. Section, where Qory qualifier must answer several questions using English was not fluent enough. In fact, some comments mention if Qory can not speak English.
However, I didn’t mean to judge her performance, but it’s more to Indonesian Miss Universe organizers to make a correction for the future, if Indonesia wants to send another candidate, please pay attention on this word “Beautiful is not enough but English will be good enough”.
