Synergy Between Malang State University and Coffee Farmer Groups To Create Tools for Overcoming Harvest Failure

Pujiharjo Village is an area located in Tirtoyudo District, Malang Regency, approximately 30 km from the capital of Tirtoyudo District. The population of Pujiharjo Village is 5,531 people with a total of 2,953 family heads. Coffee plantations are the main commodity in Pujiharjo Village because the fertile soil and location in the hills means coffee plants can produce good quality coffee beans. The Sumber Makmur Coffee Farming Group is one of several coffee farming groups in Pujiharjo Village which was founded in 2018 and is chaired by Mr. Praise Lestari. Types of coffee plants by Mr. Puji is a type of Robusta that is planted on 1.3 hectares of land. Robusta coffee can be harvested after it is around 3-4 years old depending on the variety. Mr. Robusta coffee harvesting cycle. Praise is done 8-9 months after flowering. In one harvest of Mr. Puji can produce 750 kg of coffee fruit. The collected coffee cherries will be re-processed to extract the beans using the Robusta Dry Process method to produce selected quality coffee beans that are ready for sale.

In the first harvest in 2022 Mr. Puji experienced losses when drying coffee cherries due to high rainfall and the absence of hot sunlight as a medium for drying coffee cherries. The losses suffered by Mr. Puji almost 50%, with the number of coffee beans failing to harvest as much as 327 kg out of a total of 731 kg of coffee beans collected by coffee farmers during the process of drying the beans.

Malang State University has carried out an analysis by exposing the problems in the coffee bean drying process that partners are facing by developing a product that can (1) carry out drying without worrying about high rainfall, (2) shorten the time for the coffee bean drying process, (3 ) maintain the quality of the coffee beans so that they are not damaged during the drying process. The solution offered by the proposer is the implementation of Automatic Heat Radiation based on an Arduino Uno microcontroller to reduce the risk of crop failure for robusta coffee farmers in Pujiharjo village, Malang district. With the development of Automatic Heat Radiation based on the Arduino Uno microcontroller, coffee farmers can carry out the process of drying robusta coffee beans using the Robusta Dry Process method without having to worry about high rainfall in Pujiharjo Village, with the help of the Arduino Uno microcontroller the heat produced by Automatic Heat Radiation is released automatically. evenly stable at one desired temperature without having to be monitored by coffee farmers. The maximum treatment given by Robusta coffee farmers to coffee beans using an Automatic Heat Radiation tool based on the Arduino Uno microcontroller is believed to be able to reduce the risk of crop failure as experienced in 2022.

Arduino Uno-based automatic heat radiation is the right solution to reduce the phenomenon of crop failure experienced by the Sumber Makmur Coffee Farmers Group, Pujiharjo Village, Tirtoyudo District, Malang Regency. By using Automatic Heat Radiation, coffee farmers don't need to worry when drying coffee cherries during the rainy season.

Automatic Heat Radiation based on Arduino Uno is made of iron as the framework of the tool, while the entire body of the tool is made of stainless steel plate. The use of stainless steel is mandatory for building a technology industry that is related to heat energy. Automatic heat convection has 2 important components, namely, 1) an operating system based on Arduino Uno and 2) an ultraviolet lamp. Automatic heat convection works by using electrical energy which will later be converted into heat energy using ultra violet light. The heat produced by the ultraviolet lamp will adjust to the wishes of the equipment operator. Arduino will play an important role by stabilizing the hot air so that the temperature does not drop so that the coffee beans will dry quickly and separate from the skin and flesh. Arduino Uno also acts as an automatic timer which can turn off the machine when the time specified by the machine operator has reached.
