Why is Reading Important?

Reading is more than just a means of acquiring information; it is an essential tool for developing critical thinking and creativity. The habit of reading broadens children's horizons, building empathy and expanding their understanding of the world. Through reading, children can gain insights into various perspectives and learn from others' experiences, fostering an open-minded and wise character.

Reading and Academic Achievement

Children who have developed a reading habit often show better academic performance. They not only grasp new concepts more quickly but also excel in analyzing and evaluating information. This process strengthens their critical thinking skills, which are crucial for facing examinations and challenges in higher education. Moreover, reading enhances writing skills, enabling children to express ideas clearly and coherently.

Challenges in Cultivating a Reading Culture in Indonesia

In Indonesia, despite significant efforts to promote a reading culture, many challenges remain. One major obstacle is the limited access to quality reading materials in various regions, especially in remote areas. School libraries in these areas often lack collections that suit the interests and age groups of children. Additionally, the shift towards digital technology, such as smartphones and gadgets, has made children more attracted to instant entertainment rather than reading.

Solution to Encourage Reading Interest

Addressing these challenges requires collaboration between the government, private sector, and society. Mobile library programs and free e-book distribution can help spread access to books in remote areas. Digital literacy education that teaches children how to select beneficial reading material from the internet should also be introduced. On the other hand, parents play a crucial role by setting an example and making reading a daily habit at home, such as reading with children before bedtime.

The Role of Reading Culture in Preparing for the Future

Instilling the reading habit from an early age is crucial for preparing children to face an ever-changing world. Children trained in reading are not only more adept at absorbing information but also more creative in problem-solving and possess an analytical mindset. In a workforce that increasingly demands adaptability and innovation, these skills are highly valuable.
