It feels new for the first few weeks, both PES and FIFA games. I experience the thrill on the PC and because of a broken controller I slowly increased my skill on the keyboard. But it doesn’t take long for one to get bored. Not bored with soccer but with the game. For PES and FIFA it’s hardly the same.
As time goes on you notice the animations are repeated and the commentators say the exact same thing. After a hard tackle you could predict with certainty what card the ref will give just from looking at the angle of collision. For PES and FIFA versions below possibly 2012 the tackles, collision and the way players fall are greatly overused. There is no surprise after a month’s worth of gameplay.
FIFA 15’s dynamic match presentation was said to alter this. Depending on what kind of match it was, say a rivalry or the finals the emotional display for the players and the crowd was said to differ accordingly. Players can also feel agitated after being tackled or when their teammate constantly misses with each individual having their own level of aggression. This is what can give the liveliness of what a stadium should appear.
For FIFA and PES, I feel the manager mode is always underdeveloped, never reaching its full potential. Its basic scenario is win games, acquire funds, buy-sell players and repeat. Never delving into the pressure put on manager or the bonds between the players or how difficult club transfers can be for individuals. Both games bombard the importance of transfers and a less necessity on homegrown youth players.
There are none if not a low amount of involvement to activities other than transfers. Picking sponsors, dealing with interviews, ticket prices or stadium renovation. I remember in FIFA 14 there was a budget allocation slider with transfer money on one side and wages on the other. And that was it for finances basically, nothing more.
Just imagine how cool it would be to design your own jersey and apply the logo from the sponsor you picked or setting the cost of food prices to ridiculously high. After that’s done you could continue to renovate the stadium inserting a VIP lounge increasing revenue. But instead, both FIFA and PES choose to work on their absurd online mode. FIFA lets their players not only buy the game but also leeches them into online mode where players use real money to buy a pack of cards containing football players that may or may not be good. Worst of all, it’s addicting.
I’ve never played online mode because my copy is pirated. I’ve also never tried FIFA 15 because my PC specs are dreadful. But what I think people want out of soccer games is to feel something new every time they insert the disc. A different tackle collision, reaction, referees making the wrong decision, players getting nervous, the crowd shaking the stadium. Soccer games need to bring out the vibe and give the players at home a feel of being on the pitch.
