Today's weather is hot and dry but not for long because monsoon season is coming. What was once half a desert, flourishes with life after sudden rains. Monsoon season in parts of Asia brings prosperity to the farmland with the increase of rain water. But like a double-edged blade the harsh constant rains can cause floods in urban areas presumably India, Southeast Asia and Australia.

It’s defined as the change of wind direction caused by different surface temperatures on earth. During hot days land tends to heat up faster than the oceans, causing the air above land to be preoccupied by low pressure air. It is low pressure because heat expands the air making it less dense and causes it to elevate. The opposite occurs in oceans where water has a higher heat capacity than rocks on land, creating a high pressure air above the ocean.

Wind happens because of different pressures of air in the atmosphere. High pressure tends to travel to low pressure. Air above oceans contains moist from evaporation and the difference in pressure brings the moist in the form of clouds onto land succeeded by rain. In winter or, the winter monsoon, the opposite happens and the oceans become a rough place to be in. Less radiation because the earth tilting on an axis and the sunlight comes at an angle, results in land becoming cold faster than water.

Although monsoon season is well known in Asia for causing floods, it does not happen there exclusively. In North America monsoon happens in June into September. For Australia being on the bottom half of earth, monsoon happens in January and February.

“Serious monsoons occur in India and in much of Mexico. Acapulco averages 51.8 inches of rain during its summer monsoon and just 3.3 inches the rest of the year.” -livescience.com

Ancient Egyptians of the Nile adapted from monsoon season. When the conditions were right flood waters would make the area around the river fertile. The Egyptians constructed an irrigation system that channeled the water into their crops.
