In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, helping students understand how sentences work is a key step to improving their reading, writing, and speaking. A useful way to do this is by teaching them about theme and rheme. The theme is what the sentence is about, and the rheme adds new information about it. For instance, in the sentence "The duck (theme) is leaking loudly (rheme)," the theme highlights the topic, and the rheme provide additional details. Through understanding this concept, students can create well-structured sentences and enhance the flow of their ideas.
