It's one great rock/metal song from early 80's. It was so good that me and my friends considered it as "rock/metal anthem" at the time. We listened to this song from time to time. It was actually a cover-song from an English rock band named Slade. The original version was released as a non-album single in 1973. It was written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea. It reached number 1 in UK Single Chart, giving Slade the fourth number one single.Â
However, I never listened to the Slade's original version. As a teenager growing up in the 80's, I was more familiar with the version of Quiet Riot. They recorded their own version of the song, which was million-selling hit single in US and reaching no.5 on The Billboard 100. Did Quiet Riot get permission to cover Slade's song? Yes, they did. In fact, Slade's bassist Jim Lea admitted that Quiet Riot have done a very good version of the song (Record Mirror, 1983). In short, Slade's version of the song got success in Europe --mainly UK-- but not in US. While Quiet Riot's version got bigger success worldwide, including US. It means Quiet Riot's version overshadowed Slade's version as a major hit...wow.
Quiet Riot is an American heavy metal band founded in Los Angeles in 1973. The song "Cum On Feel The Noize" was on their third studio album called Metal Health (released in 1983). This album was the first heavy metal album to reach number one the Billboard 200 Chart in November 1983. The album went on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide and over 6 million in US alone, being certified six -times platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). In Canada, this album was certified three-times platinum due to sold out more than 300.000 copies. It also reached number 5 in Canada Top Albums at that time. The band formation of Quiet Riot in that era: Kevin DuBrow (lead vocals), Carlos Cavazo (guitars, backing vocals), Rudy Sarzo (bass, backing vocals), Frankie Banali (drums, backing vocals).Â
There are 10 tracks from Metal Health album: "Metal Health" (05:17), "Cum On Feel The Noize" (Slade cover, 04:51), "Don't Wanna Let You Go" (04:43), "Slick Black Cadillac" (04:13), "Love's a Bitch" (04:11), "Breathless" (03:51), "Run For Cover" (03:38), "Battle Axe" (01:39), "Let's Get Crazy" (04:08), and "Thunderbird" (04:43). Actually the album's title track "Metal Health" is not bad. In fact, It was ranked no. 35 on VH1's 40 Greatest Metal Songs. VH1 is an American Basic Television Network. However, the song "Cum On Feel The Noize" seems more popular and viewed by many audiences online. Anyway, the artwork of Metal Health album was designed by Stan Watts, who also designed Black Sabbath's album Live Evil (1982) and a horror movie poster called The Howling (1981).Â
Until now, "Cum On Feel The Noize" is still one my favorite metal songs of all time. It means, this song is not only a "one hit wonder", but also a "GOAT" (greatest of all time) metal song. Well, at least in my opinion, OK? This review is probably far from perfect. It's mainly based on my personal point of view. Peace... and keep on rocking, guys.
