Education is considered important in the world, because the world needs educated people to build a developed country. In addition, character is also very important because today's society does not only look at how high education or degrees have been achieved, but also on the personal character of each person. Character is the main element in human beings that can shape psychological and behavioral character. It is are closely related in reflecting what a person is like.Â
Broadly speaking, the term character is closely related to the personality possessed by a person. To form a character, character education is needed. The character of the Indonesian nation has decreased, characterized by low ethics and morality in Indonesia's young generation. The Indonesian nation seems to lose its identity, many young people love foreign culture more than domestic culture and consider the negative behavior of Westerners to be something cool, such as frequent brawls between students, acts of violence or bullying.
Along with the development of technology that makes it easier for someone who uses technology, one of which is a smartphone to access something that can have a positive or negative impact. The lack of national awareness of the impact of technological development causes the misuse of this technology. Lifestyle or culture of children today's teenagers basically reflect the dominance of the paradigm of modern life which is increasingly human-centered (anthropocentrism). This paradigm has led the nations of the in the world, including Indonesia, to the passion of excessive exploitation of resources with less attention to environmental sustainability and noble values that live in society.
The relationship between humans and nature is characterized by human egoism to exploit, master, and control. Such egoism thrives in both individualistic and communalistic societies and has been able to drive technological progress, until individualistic and communalistic societies and has been able to drive technological progress, to the point that it has reached a level that on the one hand has further encouraged the advancement of science and technology and on the other has creating social, economic and cultural disparities in society.
According to Komara (2018)Â Behaving well will be able to avoid bad behavior in everyday life. These gaps hold the potential for conflict both horizontally and vertically which can erode the noble values of the nation's character, especially the Indonesian nation.
Article I of the National Education System Law of 2003 states that among the objectives of national education is to develop the potential of learners to have learners to have intelligence, personality and noble character. This means that education does not only form intelligent Indonesians, but also have personality or character, with the hope that later generations will be born who grow and develop with good character that breathes the noble values of the nation and religion. Therefore, what is needed is an education that able to integrate with the development of all dimensions of human life, namely cognitive, physical, social-emotional, creativity, and spiritual learners (Sahroni, 2017).
Character education itself aims to improve a person's adab about the process and results of education that lead to the education of the character and noble character of the learners as a whole integrated, and balanced, in accordance with the competency standards of graduates in each education unit.
Through character education, learners and young people are expected to be able to independently improve and use their knowledge study, and internalize, as well as personalize character values and noble morals so that they are manifested in daily behavior.
