One mindset that embodies this struggle is the "crab mentality." This phenomenon, rooted in the idea of "If I can't have it, neither should you," describes a tendency to pull others down when they attempt to climb higher or achieve something significant. Just as crabs in a bucket pull back any one of them trying to escape, individuals with a crab mentality try to prevent others from succeeding. This mindset is present in workplaces, social circles, families, and online communities.

The concept of crab mentality is common in many cultures and societies, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and even the Western world. It was first popularized by the Filipino psychologist Virgilio Enriquez, who observed this behavior in various social settings. This behavior reflects crab mentality in a virtual space, where users can anonymously pull down others.

Steps to Break Free from Crab Mentality

Breaking free from crab mentality requires a combination of self-awareness, empathy, and community support. Here are a few practical steps:

   Self-awareness is the first step to changing any mindset. Reflect on moments when feelings of envy or resentment arise. Asking questions like, "Why do I feel this way?" or "What can I learn from this person's success?" can help reframe negative thoughts into constructive ones.

2. Celebrate Others' Success
   Developing a habit of genuinely celebrating others' achievements is an effective way to combat crab mentality. Studies have shown that people who practice gratitude, including being thankful for others' success, experience higher levels of happiness and well-being. This practice can shift the focus from jealousy to motivation.
