The Use and Impact of English in This Era

     Today, we are faced with many modifications of foreign cultures that are developing in Indonesia. Some of the cultures that enter and develop have an impact that is contrary to our norms and culture. But behind all that, there are many benefits that we can use and have a positive impact on us both in this era and in the future, namely English. Why English? Because English is an international language, which through English we can communicate with many people in other countries so that we can increase our knowledge. We can also develop our potential better because there will be many opportunities for educational scholarships for anyone who is able to master English well

     One of the most common uses of English that we find is in popular songs today. On average, popular and trending songs today use English in their lyrics. For example, like Bruno Mars' song entitled Die With A Smile. Almost every day the song appears on our TikTok FYP, right? Besides being able to enjoy the rhythm of the song and interpret the lyrics, we can also use it as a means of learning English. The more often we listen to English songs, the more familiar we will be with the use of English that we often encounter around us in this era.

     The next common use of English that we encounter is in films. Popular films today are mostly made by countries in America and Europe. The films they make are very interesting, have good scenarios and of course all the dialogue they use throughout the film is in English. For example, Marvel films, Netflix series, and Hollywood films. Through the English-language films that we watch, we can get a lot of new vocabulary, learn different accents from each country, and of course all of that will have an impact on us in the future. We are able to communicate internationally, learn and learn about the culture of people abroad, and increase friendships.

     Listening to podcasts is also a popular culture in this era. Many top celebrities both in Indonesia and abroad have popularized podcasts among the younger generation. Joe Rogan is the number 1 podcaster in the world with 3 billion listeners and millions of subscribers from various platforms. The theme of his podcast is comedy and of course it is very interesting to listen to. Through podcasts, I personally learned a lot and got a lot of positive impacts such as honing my listening skills, adding new vocabulary, and American slang.

     In this digital era, learning English is very easy for us to do anywhere. There are already many digital applications that we can access for free to learn English. There are many positive impacts that we can take advantage of for our future lives. The best way we can do is to take advantage of all the conveniences available to learn and keep learning.
