Sarimin goes to Spain? Of course not! Do you think the title is misleading? Go ahead! Do not hesitate to report to admin. Does anyone notice a typo in the title? Good for you. Just type Barclona into the Google search box and your top results pop up instantly, such as “Hasil video untuk Barclona” or “Barclona Facebook” or “Spanish Courses in Barclona”. Well, Sarimin is not going to discuss about football or anything related to Barcelona as the second largest city in Spain. This is just Sarimin’s first visit to Singaraja. Here, Sarimin got lost in warungs! [caption id="attachment_135099" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Warung Barclona ©Mamak Ketol™"][/caption] Warung Barclona is located in Jl. Ketapang, Kalibukbuk. Underneath the warung's name, there is small wooden board. It says Balinese Seafood. Hmmm … what’s for lunch? See anything Spanish? I don’t think so. Take a look at the menu outside. There are two chalkboards displaying what you can eat. The one on the left showing Roasted Duck, Shrimp, Vegetables Soup, Plain Rice, Uraban, Prawn Crackers, Sambal and Fruit for Dessert. Disappointed? Let’s see what’s on the second board. Hmmm … under the heading “Our Speciality” you’ll find Pepesan Babi Guling, Sate Pelecing, Tuna Steak, Babi Kecap, Fried Prawn, Ayam Panggang and Pepesan Tempe. Well, if you are on special diet due to religious reasons, for example, you need to be careful with anything contains “babi”. Though, here, “babi” literally means pig. What comes in your meal is certainly pork. This Balinese Seafood warung does not seem to have much seafood options. Yes, they do have Shrimp and Fried Prawn. The first is smaller that the latter, I supposed. What else? Tuna Steak. Hm ... it's yummy. Though I’ve seen tuna as big as dolphins (hyperbole) in Pasar Anyar, it's still one of my faves. If you like satay, try this Sate Pelecing. This satay is originally from Singaraja. The one in Barclona is made of fish that is seasoned with Balinese spices. This dish becomes the third seafood menu on the list! If you trust Lonely Planet, you may want to sample their specialty, which is Pepesan Babi Guling. Do remember that pepesan has to do with anything wrapped in banana leaf. But, in this wrap, you’ll find slices of suckling pig meat seasoned with garlic, onions, tomato, ginger, turmeric and candlenut. Anything to drink? I was told that Banana Milk Shake is the best! Dare to be Different [caption id="attachment_135100" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Balinese seafood ©Mamak Ketol™"][/caption] When you work within the hospitality industry, you want your customers to remember your restaurant or warung. It needs to stand out from other local options. You need to be different. If you believe that using foreign names, even with incorrect spelling for your warung is an act of being different, go for it. However, being different does not necessarily mean people will love your warung and enjoy your food instantly. You need to hit your target market right between the eyes. In other words, it is necessary to set up and know your target diners. It is recommended that you give something that interest them. Try to identify your USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Then, state clearly the essence of your eating place, the essence of your offering, so that the customers will know why they should eat in your place instead of your competitors. Therefore, take an effort to create something new. Using local words to name your specialties seem like a good idea. Pepesan Babi Guling, for example, indicates what you can do with suckling pig differently. Well, babi guling or roast pig is not a new cuisine to tourists in Bali. While pork can be said as part of the Balinese meal and culture, the word pepesan is not originally Bali. The Balinese word for pepesan is tum. Here you can combine what is said to be original and different. It’s this unique, ethnic meals that will interest people. How about you? Do you dare to be different?
