Ready to be pop-cultured?
Even though I’m a working mom and about to enter my thirties, I always try to keep up with the world and its antics, especially things related to pop culture. You can say that I am quite obsessed with the form of pop culture especially the hype surrounding reality shows. Reality shows (American ones to be specific) have developed in a rapid pace since I can remember. Back in the late 90s/early 2000, when someone said anything about reality shows, I would think of a competition where contestants have to eat bugs or something for a million dollars. Well, those types of shows still exist, but they are a minority compared to the modern once that pop up in our TV at the present time.
I dedicate this post to get you pop-cultured on some of my favorite reality shows that are still up and running.

You just can’t talk about reality shows without mentioning America’s favorite family that everyone loves to hate. Here in Jakarta, you can catch the shows on E! Entertainment Channel. For you who might have been living under a rock for the past few years, KUWTK is basically about an American family and you get to see what they do all day long. Dull? Nope, that’s one word that is definitely not used to describe this show. The matriarch and motherly figure that shines is Kris Jenner, along with her now ex-husband, Bruce Jenner (who has since transformed into Caitlyn Jenner) and their modern day Brady Bunch. Kris has 3 daughters and 1 son from her previous marriage, Bruce has 3 sons and 1 daughter also from previous marriages and together they have 2 daughters. The highlight is more on Kris’ children, Kourtney, Khloe, Kim, Rob and also her two younger daughters Kendall and Kylie. Almost all the Kardashian/Jenner clan have careers in the entertainment business, making them the most recognizable family in the world. You have fashion designers, models, cosmetic queens, writers, life style consultants, Olympic winner, Mom-ager, health addict all rolled up in one huge family. The dynamic of their family is seen in each and every episode and they are the epitome of pop culture. Issues such as divorce, marriage, transgender, moving out, modelling around the world, nude covers, celebrity feuds, separation, and fame among others are just a daily discussion in the Kardashian world.Â
There are some parts of the show that can be inspiring at times, but it’s basically a show about how a rich and famous family goes on about their errands and how they deal with each other. It is pure entertainment to watch and a blast to laugh about, but not necessarily packed with the essentials you need to survive life. KUWTK is and always will be my guilty pleasure.

Now, this is one inspiring reality show. It’s a cooking contest to see who can cook the best out of all the home cooks that enter. In Jakarta, you can find it on Star World Channel. It’s a mega franchise and I know that there are shows like this in America, Indonesia, Australia, Asia and Canada. My most favorite show is the one that is viewed in America. The present judges to date are Chef Gordon Ramsay and Chef Christina Tosi. Chef Ramsay brings a certain life of its own in the show, with his sharp comments, quick wit and unapologetic attitude. Man, you either win it or lose it with this guy, there’s no in between. But behind all that, Chef Ramsay is one brilliant chef that cares so much for his food and it shows when you get to see him in Master Class and teach all the home cooks his signature dishes. Chef Christina is an excellent addition to the Master Chef family, she brings all the love and laughter to the contestants and I love seeing her interact with the children on Master Chef Kids. There have been so many inspiring moments in this show and it really gets you motivated to go after your dreams and pursue a career that you want to achieve. The food on this show is delicious, I feel like I want to eat my TV set every time I see a contestant present their cooking to the judges. This show also has many guest stars/judges that spices up the dynamics from time to time. Throw in some tough challenges, some heart-warming moments and you got yourself some good TV.

This is also an inspiring reality show (competition based) that keep my eyes glued to the TV for about an hour. It’s a contest for inspiring young models to try and make it big in the modelling world. The show is hosted by Tyra Banks, who also created and produced the franchise. Tyra is a force of nature that brings along her personality and passion for all things fashion and modelling. Usually there are about 13-14 models chosen to be trained in a boot-camp by Tyra and a couple of other mentors. Basically they are supplied with weapons to join the battle of the models in the fashion world. What’s interesting about this series, is the amount of work that goes into every single photo shoot. The contestants are really being thrown into this world of fashion, hair and make-up, posing, cameras, catwalks and lights. It’s really entertaining to see the back story of what goes on behind photo shoots, fashion shows etc. The models are competing against each other to gain the title of America’s Next Model. They win a modelling contract with a top model agency and also get to be a brand ambassador of a product that sponsors that particular season.
