After organizing six successful Nationwide English Olympics (NEO) that had witnessed an increasing number of participants every year, the Binus University’s student English Club is moving its span to a higher level. This year the Olympics is broadening to the Southeast Asian scale, and has thus changed its name to the 2011 Southeast Asia English Olympics (2011SEO). The Olympics gathered 600 participants last year from high schools and universities across the country, and is now calling students from Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam, Laos and Timor Leste to join in. The 2011SEO will run from Feb. 14 to 19 at the Anggrek Campus building of Binus University in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta. It expects to see more than 800 participants from various high schools and universities, as well as the school and university affiliates and experts. The registration process opened Nov. 15 and will remain open through Feb. 13. Participants can compete in the categories of debate, word scrabble, news casting, storytelling, speech and short movie making. The organizer also plans to support book donations for an orphanage in Jakarta in which the participants will be involved and the Discover Indonesia Tour to the Indonesia Miniature Park (TMII) in East Jakarta. There will also be a gala dinner for participants and committees. Under the theme “Ambassadors of Nations” — which means that participants will act on behalf of their country — the Olympics is held because Indonesian students are concerned with their generation’s English abilities and the usefulness of building and maintaining positive relations among countries. The competition is supported by the National Education Ministry and will be broadcast through local TV channels and Binus TV. Furthermore, judges will be professionals on each subject. Among them is young movie director Andi Bachtiar Yusuf who will also be a tutor for Pre-competition Active Coaching — one of the Olympics’ agendas to give to participants the skills, knowledge and techniques they need in the competition. The Olympics will close with a bang. On the final day, the last participants standing will compete in public venues so that many people can witness the process and the results of the international English competition.
