Synergy Between Malang State University and Coffee Farmer Groups To Create Tools for Overcoming Harvest Failure

Pujiharjo Village is an area located in Tirtoyudo District, Malang Regency, approximately 30 km from the capital of Tirtoyudo District. The population of Pujiharjo Village is 5,531 people with a total of 2,953 family heads. Coffee plantations are the main commodity in Pujiharjo Village because the fertile soil and location in the hills means coffee plants can produce good quality coffee beans. The Sumber Makmur Coffee Farming Group is one of several coffee farming groups in Pujiharjo Village which was founded in 2018 and is chaired by Mr. Praise Lestari. Types of coffee plants by Mr. Puji is a type of Robusta that is planted on 1.3 hectares of land. Robusta coffee can be harvested after it is around 3-4 years old depending on the variety. Mr. Robusta coffee harvesting cycle. Praise is done 8-9 months after flowering. In one harvest of Mr. Puji can produce 750 kg of coffee fruit. The collected coffee cherries will be re-processed to extract the beans using the Robusta Dry Process method to produce selected quality coffee beans that are ready for sale.

In the first harvest in 2022 Mr. Puji experienced losses when drying coffee cherries due to high rainfall and the absence of hot sunlight as a medium for drying coffee cherries. The losses suffered by Mr. Puji almost 50%, with the number of coffee beans failing to harvest as much as 327 kg out of a total of 731 kg of coffee beans collected by coffee farmers during the process of drying the beans.
