Herding Animals With The Mutant Cow

Cows, bison’s, pigs and chickens, what do these animals have in common? Well one thing’s for sure and that is that they are nice. What I mean by nice, is that they don’t aggressively try to attack humans unless they are provoked. They do in fact hurt grass because it is their diet. But the grass is all chill and don’t bother, probably because they don’t have any feelings and can’t simply run away from cows.

It’s a good thing that cows are nice. And because of this, we can herd them. We give them grass, they earn our trust and we slaughter them when they are fat adults. It’s kind of manipulating when you think about it.

Herding was another way for early human civilizations to raise food, other than agriculture. Agriculture kept tummies full, but herding cows provided healthier meals. Some villages ended up doing both. Farming when it’s the season and herding when you’re not farming. With that you end up having two choices for dinner, beef and corn.

But herding animals isn’t as easy as it looks. In Europe areas, people herded sheep and goats. And goats need to eat a lot of grass in order to grow into a complete full sized hunk of meat that you can use for many delicacies. The only problem here is that grass doesn’t instantly pop out of the ground after it gets trampled upon and eaten. More goats mean less grass and more dung.

Herding isn’t a very effective way because you have to travel to far places trying to find good grass for you goats in order to make good meat. This wasn’t that easy in the desert because you don’t find shrubs everywhere. Herding animals was a good idea though, considering that you can get milk for a drink, food from their meat, and shelter from their wool or leather.

The goats get exercise and their food is healthy because it’s natural. Its way better than stuffing chickens into a sad small room full of other chickens that are waiting to be slaughtered. It’s sad that many big food companies do this. The chickens don’t get their daily exercise (because how can you exercise in a room full of other chickens) and the food that they eat isn’t natural either. Also, most chickens can suffocate or get trampled by other chickens and die in the process.

Chickens don’t mean to step on other chickens. It’s just that the whole room is full so you don’t have much space to walk. Chickens are peaceful animals. They only time they are aggressive is when it’s about mating or territory, or when the chicken feels like it is harmed. Chickens will flee if they see something that will harm them. They aren’t the fighter type and will fly their way to safety, if they ever need to.

Hippos on the other hand, are very aggressive when something steps on its territory. Hippos will chase you down and sometimes will end up killing you with their giant teeth. Because of that, hippos aren’t that easy to tame and thus making them hard to herd. Elephants have valuable tusks and contain lots of meat, but they take too long to reproduce. So you can cross out elephants from that list.

The most reliable herding animals are the pigs and cows. You seen pigs on TV and everything right? And Americans love to eat bacon, beef and pepperoni pizzas. But did you know that pigs and cows aren’t America’s native animals?

What I mean by that is that a long time ago, there were no pigs in America. It wasn’t until the Europeans brought pigs into America. And what’s even more exciting is that the domestic cow isn’t native to anywhere. Cattle (not the bison) are a man-made species. Humans have the knowledge to selective breed animals, thus creating a mutant cow. It’s amazing what knowledge can do. Thanks for reading!
