Berdasarkan Black Law Dictionary Fourth Edition, actio civilis adalah "In the common law. A civil action, as distinguished from a criminal action.". Definisi tersebut kemudian ditambahkan keterangan dengan bunyi " Bracton divides personal actions into criminalia et civilia, according as they grow out of crimes or contracts. Actiones civiles are those forms of remedies which were established under the rigid system of the civil law, the jus civilis."
