Nationalism in Studying English

In Cambridge Advance Learner’s Dictionary, Nationalism means desire for and the attempt to achieve political independence for your country or nation or a great or too great love of your own country. As an Iinternational language English is very needed especially for students and businessmen. Nationalism can be encouraged more in studying English by proper understanding. I remembered words when joined English class. Teacher (Mr. Joe) said that you must speak Indonesian first when meet foreigner. If he can not understand Indonesian then you can speak English well if it possible. Then tell the foreigner that he is in Indonesia better he knows about Indonesian even a little. Than we act as if we can speak English but the fact shows otherwise. It seems egoist having such of that principle. But if we want to have a great country and to be worth nation it can be a good one. The messages of the words are first we must show them that he is in Indonesia and he speak to Indonesian. Another side if he can speak Indonesian he must do it showing his respectable. Second is the principle shows a humble character of person who says it, although you are good in English. It is one of nationalism attitude as an Indonesian people. Happy English in Indonesia.
