Abstract
This article discusses the progressive thinking of Islamic education by Muhammad Abduh, who responded to the dichotomy in education in his day. The dichotomy involved Western education that lacked religion and religious education that paid little attention to the general sciences. The integration of these two educations resulted in human characters with different focuses: the former was more concerned with worldly affairs, while the latter prioritized ukhrawi affairs. Muhammad Abduh attempted to reform the goals of Islamic education by emphasizing both worldly and afterlife aspects. He introduced the concept of an integral Islamic education curriculum that combined religious and general sciences. In addition, Abduh proposed effective, varied and innovative teaching methods as part of his efforts to improve the Islamic education system.
