Ecoton Urges BPOM: Fight Microplastics in Baby Care and Personal Care Products

Activists from Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (Ecoton) and the Brawijaya University Sea Diving Community prepare a theatrical action in front of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) office in Surabaya, East Java, Thursday (Nov 7, 2024). The action was aimed at urging BPOM to act immediately on the findings of microplastics detected in baby care and personal care products widely circulated in the market.Ecoton warns that microplastics in facial cleansers, soaps and shampoos have the potential to pollute ecosystems and threaten the health of babies and young people in East Java.Ecoton conducted research on several baby care and personal care products that are widely used by the people of East Java. Find microplastic in 50 personal care brands, Ecoton asks BPOM to test microplastic in personal care in the market, Of the 83 products studied and circulating in the market, 58 percent of the products were detected with microplastic.
