The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is charged with maintaining international peace and security, a mandate that ostensibly positions it as a bastion of global justice. However, its stance on the Palestinian issue has revealed a disturbing inconsistency that merits critical scrutiny. The UNSC's actions, or lack thereof, regarding the Palestinian plight raise questions about its commitment to its foundational principles and its susceptibility to political manipulation.

#### Historical Context and Ongoing Struggles

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a protracted and deeply entrenched struggle, has witnessed numerous ebbs and flows since the mid-20th century. Despite multiple resolutions and countless debates within the halls of the UN, a just and lasting peace remains elusive. The UNSC, in particular, has been criticized for its failure to enforce resolutions aimed at addressing the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinian people.

Resolutions such as UNSC Resolution 242, which calls for the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the 1967 conflict, and Resolution 338, which emphasizes the need for negotiations to establish a just and durable peace, have remained largely unimplemented. This lack of enforcement undermines the very authority and credibility of the UNSC.

#### The Influence of Geopolitics

A significant factor in the UNSC's ineffectiveness is the geopolitical dynamics that pervade its decision-making processes. The veto power wielded by its five permanent members (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China) often results in a paralyzed Council, unable to take decisive action due to conflicting national interests. The United States, in particular, has frequently used its veto to block resolutions perceived as unfavorable to Israel, a close ally.

This persistent use of the veto undermines the UNSC's ability to function as an impartial arbiter in international conflicts. It highlights a troubling reality: the UNSC's decisions are not always guided by principles of justice and international law, but by the political interests of its most powerful members.

#### Humanitarian Consequences

The consequences of the UNSC's inaction are dire. The Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, continue to endure severe humanitarian crises. Blockades, military incursions, and a lack of essential services have resulted in widespread suffering. According to reports from various human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, the living conditions in Gaza are deplorable, with restricted access to healthcare, clean water, and electricity.

The UNSC's failure to address these issues effectively is not just a political failure; it is a moral one. The Palestinian people are entitled to the same rights and protections as any other population under international law. By failing to uphold these principles, the UNSC is complicit in the ongoing violation of Palestinian human rights.
