In the midst of a wide choice of natural ingredients, we often forget the power of natural ingredients available in our own kitchen. One of them is oatmeal, which so far we may only know as a healthy food for breakfast. However, did you know that oatmeal can also be used as a natural facial mask to provide extraordinary benefits for our skin?

  • Oatmeal: The Little One with Many Benefits

Oatmeal (Avena Sativa) is not only a good source of energy for the body, but is also rich in nutrients that are beneficial for the skin. One facial treatment that can be done is by using a mask. Apart from being a delicious source of nutrition for breakfast, oatmeal can also be used as a natural facial mask which provides extraordinary benefits for the skin. Masks are traditional cosmetic preparations for cleaning pores and improving facial skin that have been discovered since ancient times. Using the basic ingredient oatmeal (Avena sativa) as a facial mask has many benefits, because oatmeal contains many important vitamins and minerals and also contains antioxidants. The antioxidants contained in oats are avenanthramide, selenium, phenol, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. Oatmeal for dry facial skin can be used as an alternative to traditional facial care.   • Ingredients in oatmeal 

Oatmeal is a product made from oat grains, and its chemical composition varies depending on the type of oat and processing method. Generally, oatmeal contains a mixture of complex carbohydrates, fiber, protein, healthy fats, and several vitamins and minerals. The chemical composition, including the direct composition of oats, is relatively the same as other cereals, such as:

  • Ash content is a source of minerals in food which only contains a small amount of around 1.5%.
  • Protein Oats contain protein, but the levels depend on differences in climate, soil and optimal growth. These types of proteins are albumin, globulin, gliadin and prolamin. The average protein content is 14-15%. Although the amount is not as much as animal protein sources, oatmeal still makes an important contribution to daily protein intake.
  • Fat, the type of fat contained in oats is a mixture of triglycerides, namely the compound glycerol and three fatty acids in the form of phosphatidylcholine, choline, ethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, serine with 32 lyosophosphatidyl derivatives, the total content of which is around 1.8% -2.5%. Oatmeal also contains unsaturated fats, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats are important for supporting brain function, reducing inflammation, and maintaining heart health
  • Carbohydrates, Oatmeal contains complex carbohydrates, especially beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is a type of water-soluble fiber known for its ability to lower blood cholesterol levels and maintain heart health. contained in oats is starch which contains gamilose and amylopectin. Amylose consists of a straight chain polysaccharide in helical form with -1.4% glycosidic bonds
  • The minerals and vitamins contained are stable. The content of phosphorus and vitamin B complex minerals remains stable. Its physico-chemical properties include moisture, ash, water absorption and development time.

Keep in mind that the chemical composition of oatmeal can vary between types of oatmeal, such as instant oatmeal, rolled oats, steel-cut oats, or organic oatmeal. Apart from that, added ingredients such as sugar, salt and preservatives in packaged oatmeal products can also affect their nutritional composition. Therefore, it is always recommended to read product labels carefully.

  • Why is Oatmeal Suitable as a Facial Mask?

Facial masks are a series of skincare products that are used at the final stage in facial skin care procedures. Masks are also cosmetics that work deeply (depth cleansing) because they can remove dead skin cells. Oatmeal is not only used as an ingredient in making food, but can also be useful in maintaining skin health and beauty. The function of oatmeal in making facial masks is as an adhesive, so that when placed on the skin it can stick and create a tight feeling.

Oatmeal contains powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals and relieve inflammation of the skin. This helps maintain healthy skin and reduces the risk of premature aging.

The beta-glucan content in oatmeal has extraordinary moisturizing abilities. Oatmeal masks help maintain skin moisture, so they are suitable for all skin types, including dry skin. The vitamins contained in oatmeal and which function to moisturize the skin include vitamins A, C, E and H.
