It started with a UAS assignment from one of the ELT (English Language Teaching) lecturers. At that time, ELT students were asked to make a rubric assessment, whether it was from writing, speaking, reading, and listening assessments. Before that, we must first understand what a rubric actually is.A rubric is an assessment instrument used by teachers or lecturers to measure student performance based on specific descriptions that describe students' abilities at a certain level in an aspect.
The world of education is not just the business of educating teachers. But it is also related to how a student can achieve the learning target and their interaction patterns with others. One of the things that should be considered by the teacher is related to the instrument for assessing the learning outcomes of each student. It's just that, in assessment, sometimes a teacher requires detailed planning and indicators. Usually, the teacher can use a rubric.
Even though we are not teachers or still prospective teachers, of course, we also understand that there is a rubric in the ideal assessment component. Usually, rubrics are often used and recommended. Especially when learning has entered the era of the Independent Curriculum as it is today. Then the rubric can function as a tool to carry out the evaluation process in terms of the quality and performance aspects of students. For this reason, it is important to understand how to compile rubrics. How to compile rubrics must be known by teachers or candidates because these devices are very important when a teacher evaluates student learning outcomes.
Before compiling a rubric, we must determine what activities or products will be assessed. These activities or products are tailored to the competencies or learning objectives to be achieved. The scoring rubric is adjusted to the purpose of the assessment. For the purpose of formative assessment, the aspects/criteria in the rubric focus on producing information that is used as feedback for improving learning. Thus, scores or grades are only one of the goals of assessing formative skills; even rubrics can be presented in the form of descriptions.
In conclusion, having the task of making a rubric made me understand how important it is for us prospective teachers to know how to make an assessment rubric. Rubrics make it easier for us to assess our students because we have made a reference or portion of the number of marks we will give. This task is also very useful for me and other friends, and of course, for us in the future who will face the world of teacher training.
