Role of Video Games as a Medium for Learning Grammar

The traditional way of learning grammar sometimes makes people feel difficult. For example, the old method is repetitive learning, memorisation, and passive learning such as only reading books and listening to lectures. This method is quite monotonous and makes us forget important things such as practicing it in the real world, it makes us lose the opportunity to be directly involved. In contrast, video games that captivate millions around the world to play them offer a new, dynamic, fresh, and flexible approach to learning. Video games combine immersive worlds, interactivity, and instant feedback. Video games are revolutionising the way grammar rules are learned and taught, creating a learning environment that motivates, builds creativity and critical thinking.

The Problem With Traditional Grammar Learning

Traditional grammar learning only focuses on one learning model and that is what makes it monotonous and dry. Students are usually only told to memorise grammar rules, or correct a wrong word in a sentence without first explaining the context and relevance. This method can feel boring and dry especially when it focuses on discussing abstract rules rather than explaining how grammar functions in communication. without direct relevance and practical use, it will make it difficult for students to maintain motivation and tend to make it more difficult for students to receive the material. It can also inhibit students from exploring different ways of learning grammar rules.

Traditional learning does not always take into account the individuality of each student, it does not provide interactive learning. Many students struggle in learning grammar because they are not given enough time to practice applying their knowledge in the real world. The lack of direct engagement leads to a lack of retention, as students fail to see the direct application of grammar skills in everyday life. As a result, students perceive grammar lessons as very difficult, abstract and boring, which leads to frustration and disinterest among learners.

How Video Games Make Learning Grammar More Engaging

Instead, Video games offer a revolution in grammar learning by providing a different alternative to traditional learning by creating an interactive, innovative, creative, engaging and rewarding learning environment. Video games tap into individual motivation by offering challenges, rewards and progression systems to its players. In these environments, players are intensively tasked with solving tasks and problems relevant to the game's narrative. By utilizing these features, video games transform grammar learning into goal-driven.

One of the main advantages of using video games as a medium for grammar learning is the immediate feedback received by players. This instant reinforcement helps the student in identifying where he/she has made a mistake and can correct it on the spot, thus helping to improve the student's understanding of grammar concepts. Unlike traditional methods that provide feedback that is not immediate and takes time and makes it difficult for students to improve faster, video games offer immediate feedback to the player, which fosters a sense of accomplishment and provides motivation to the player.

Types of Games That Help Learn Grammar

There are several types of games that are suitable for use as suggestions for learning grammar. Adventure games, for example, involve the player in a narrative where grammar challenges are applied to the storyline. The player may be asked to identify sentences in dialog, correct mistakes in a character's dialog, or even choose the right dialog to continue the story. Riddles and trivia, a type of game that offers players the opportunity to solve grammar-related puzzles in an analytical, creative and innovative way. For example, correctly matching subjects and verbs or rearranging jumbled sentences into grammatically accurate ones. The game encourages students to use critical thinking and problem solving, helping players apply grammar rules through repeated practice. Role-playing games (RPG) are also the type of games that are very suitable for learning grammar. In these games players create and customize their own characters, complete missions and interact with other characters. The use of correct grammar in both written and spoken interactions is crucial and becomes a core mechanic of the game. As the game progresses, players can unlock new levels, tools or abilities based on their grammar proficiency. There are many games of this type on the world market, one of them and quite famous for being able to play with players from abroad is GTA Roleplay.
