The Great Power Approach to the South China Sea Dispute

In the context of international relations, the great power approach refers to the view that great powers  have great influence in determining policies and resolving disputes in conflict areas. The great power approach to the South China Sea conflict recognizes that major geopolitical powers, such as the United States and China, play an important role in determining the outcome of international disputes. This approach emphasizes placing the interests and policies of major powers as the main drivers of political dynamics in the region.

The great power approach in foreign policy refers to how great powers use their economic and military power to influence other countries on an international scale. In diplomacy studies, great power diplomacy is defined as a country that influences other countries. Great powers use the instruments of military and economic capabilities to carry out diplomacy and encourage other countries to consider the actions that will be taken against them. This theory emphasizes that great powers tend to behave to increase their power to achieve their national interests and security. The involvement of great powers in international conflicts can trigger tensions between them and affect the dynamics of world politics. This theory also highlights how great power behavior drives them to become leading states of the world with consequences for international events.

The Great Power approach to the conflict in the South China Sea also emphasizes the importance of understanding the dynamics of competition and cooperation between great powers, as well as the consequences of their involvement or interference in conflicts in the region. It emphasizes the need for balance and sustained diplomacy to avoid conflict escalation that is detrimental to regional stability. The theory of "the great power approach" in the South China Sea dispute refers to the role of major powers in resolving conflicts in the region. In this context, Indonesia is considered a regional power that seeks to maintain its position in the international system through diplomacy and the deployment of military forces in North Natuna waters.

This theory also considers balancing strategies, where small countries like Indonesia try to maintain security stability in the region from major power competition. In addition, this theory also considers bandwagoning strategies, where countries with smaller power alliance with countries with greater power. This has been done by Indonesia, which has established good relations with the United States and China, while maintaining its independence as a middle power. Thus, Indonesia overcomes the South China Sea dispute by considering the role of large and small countries and maintaining its national interests through diplomacy and military preparedness.
