Taxation plays a crucial role in maintaining economic stability in a country, including Indonesia. Taxes are the primary source of government revenue used to finance various development programs and activities. However, corruption challenges in the taxation sector can hinder active participation of the public in paying taxes, thereby affecting overall economic stability.

Corruption issues within the taxation authorities often lead to public apathy and fear towards fulfilling their tax obligations. Corrupt practices by certain tax officials create negative perceptions and erode public trust in the tax system. This, in turn, results in decreased moral values and a reduced sense of responsibility among the public to pay their taxes, as they fear that their payments will be subject to corruption by tax officials.

One prominent example tarnishing the image of the tax system is the Rubicon case, which initially involved an assault but later revealed alleged corruption involving tax officials. Cases like this significantly damage the image of taxation and decrease public morale and responsibility in fulfilling tax obligations.

Therefore, addressing corruption issues within the taxation sector is essential for ensuring sustainable economic stability. Concrete steps need to be taken to overcome these challenges and improve tax compliance among the public.

One crucial step in addressing corruption is to strengthen transparent and accountable tax governance. The government must enhance internal oversight and control mechanisms within the tax authorities, including implementing rigorous supervision systems and conducting more intensive internal audits. These measures will help prevent corrupt practices and create a clean and honest tax environment.

Additionally, robust law enforcement against individuals involved in tax corruption is a priority. The government must demonstrate a strong commitment to eradicate corruption by imposing appropriate sanctions on those implicated. Stern punishments will set an example for other tax officials and the general public that corruption practices will not be tolerated within the taxation sector.

Establishing independent institutions dedicated to handling corruption cases within the taxation sector is also crucial. These institutions should possess sufficient authority and independence in conducting investigations, prosecutions, and case management related to tax corruption. Such institutions will ensure effective and fair law enforcement against corruption in the taxation sector.

Furthermore, improving tax compliance among the public is equally important. Low compliance rates can hinder revenue collection and disrupt fiscal balance. Therefore, intensive efforts are needed to enhance public awareness of the importance of voluntary and responsible tax payment.

Intensive tax education and socialization programs should be implemented to enhance public understanding of the role of taxes in development and economic stability. The public should be provided with a deeper understanding of how taxes contribute to infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and other social programs that directly benefit them.

Moreover, transparency of information and public participation in the tax process are crucial. The government should provide easy and clear access to information regarding tax regulations, taxpayer obligations, and their rights. In this regard, leveraging information technology and communication can be an effective means of providing accurate and easily accessible information to the public.
