Once upon a time in a misty small town, there lived a gorgeous girl named Carol. The stars in the town barely seen there because the thick fog covered the whole town. Carol was an adventurous girl and faithful. She lived alone in a house on top of a hill. Her house was the closest to the sky than other houses that she could touch the moon. Every time she felt alone she always came to the roof to watch the moon, and sometimes talked to the moon herself.
When the morning came, Carol prepared to go to school and studied joyfully. At the school, she didn’t have much friend because every kid didn’t want to talk to her. However, Carol wasn’t sad at all. Instead, after school she went to wandering through the town. She was trying to find new things to forget her loneliness. She missed her parents badly. Her parents died when carol was seven years old because her parents couldn’t give half of their wealth to the wizard. At that time, Carol’s parents were in economy crisis, so the wizard asked of Carol in exchange. Nevertheless, her parents rejected the request and offered themselves to be taken on one condition, that Carol could live freely and never be bothered. The wizard agreed and never seen again since that day.
Carol walked up and down the hill, she also visited the lake, even discovered a cave but didn’t get anything fascinating. Carol met old man Jenkins fishing in the river, she wanted to catch some fishes too, perhaps, it could make her amused. Carol then shouted to old man Jenkins “Hey, Jenkins! Can I join fishing with you?” Old man Jenkins didn’t answer Carol. She thought, “Maybe he doesn’t hear me. It’s okay.” Then Carol walked again and saw group of people singing in the gazebo. She approached to them and said, “Excuse me, what song do you guys sing? It sounds pleasant!” But all she got was only a melody. Carol then gone and said, “Maybe it’s too loud there that my voice covered by the sound of singing.” Then, she arrived in the town square, when she saw a bunch of kids were playing hide and seek, they ran away before Carol even split any words to them. There, she realized that everyone wasn’t liked to talk to her. So, she stood back and went home.
Carol felt empty when she got home. She wrote in her diary about the day that she through and how the world was so unfair to her. She then went up to the roof of her house to watched the moon. “Oh the moon, I have no one to talk to. I wish you could be the one. I’m sure that I’ll be the happiest person in the world.” She sat there and adored about how fun it is to be in the side of the moon. But she knew that it was only a ridiculous fantasy. Carol spent the rest of the night dreaming about up there with the moon.
The next day, Carol went to tea garden to picked tea leaves. In there, somebody adressed her, “Hey, kid! What are you doing here?” Carol was very happy that somebody finally talked to her. “I am picking some tea leaves to drink at home.”, said Carol enthusiastic. The woman replied, “You better go. You will make the visitors scared and leave.” Carol had no idea why the woman said that to her. Carol then left from there, crestfallen. Apparently, the woman didn’t want to talk to Carol but to kick out her from there. But Carol won’t let it drowned herself, she then went to a park in the center of the town to cheer herself again. “Maybe there was someone who wanted to talk to her in there.” she thought. In the park, she met a group of kids who were playing hide and seek again. She stepped closer and asked to join with them, “Would you mind if I join playing with you?” They turned and looked at Carol, the kid who was seemingly the group leader, Mikayla, rejected Carol and told her that she didn’t belong anywhere. The words were sharp and struck her heart. But Carol just smiled to them, she gave the sweetest and brightest smile that she ever showed to anyone and left. Carol cried silently all the way home.
At night, Carol sat again on the roof and talked to the moon hysterically, “Oh the moon, where do I belong? When everybody in the town doesn’t accept me, does up there I am accepted?” She surprised that the Moon answered her. “Of course, my dear. You can be up here with me and I’ll be your friend forever.” said the moon softly. Then, Carol replied, desperate, “But how, Mr. Moon? I’m just an ordinary human.” The moon answered, “You are right, that’s the thing. It will be a little matter for you. I’m afraid that you can’t do this, sweet girl.” Carol replied pleadingly “I’ll do anything just to be up there, Mr. Moon.” The moon was unsure, but he had to told her the rule. “You should sacrifice yourself to brighten this whole town to be up here. Only the wizard can change you. But remember, once you sacrifice yourself, you can’t turn to your human form. It only happens once in a blue moon.” Carol then went to the wizard’s house to make a deal to him. Carol would do anything even sacrifice herself so that she could never felt lonely again, furthermore, it was the only way to be closer to her parents.
At the wizard’s house, Carol spoke to the wizard straightforward about her wish. However, the wizard refused it because he already made a promise to Carol’s parents. “I can’t make you. It takes so much risks.” said the wizard. Carol kneeled and begged the wizard, “Please, Mr. Wizard, I have no one here. I miss my parents so much. At least, from up there, I could be a little bit close to them. And that’s enough for me.” The wizard felt pity for her. He remembered how big the love of her parents for her just to saw their only child grow up and live a normal life. Carol looked at the wizard in despair, hoping for the wizard changed her. The wizard asked her, “Is this fair for you?” Carol nodded quickly, “Perfectly, Mr. Wizard.” The wizard then said with a heavy heart, “Alright, if it’s fair for you, kid, I’ll make you up there. I will put a spell on you to come down to earth again in every one year. Your light will be a grace for this town.” The wizard granted her wish. Carol was excited to heard that and strengthen her heart in the last minutes of her life as a human.
The next day, the mist in the town disappeared. The sun and the star showed itself to all people in the town and they shouted and cried tears of joy as the light poured everywhere. Mikayla and her friends enjoy the shine of the star, Mikayla stared at the star and said to herself, “I think I have seen this brightest and sweetest light before.” And Mikayla remembered one girl who has a sweet smile and shine like the star. Ever since, Carol was never seen again. And the whole town being bright all the time.
