"Hugo" memimpin nominasi dengan 11 termasuk Best Picture kemudian diikuti oleh "The Artist" dengan 10 nominasi. "Hugo", film arahan Martin Scrosese ini mendapat nominasi untuk 3 dari 5 kategori utama Oscar, yaitu Best Picture, Directing, dan Adapted Screenplay. Sisanya adalah Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, dan Visual Effects. Sedang pesaing ketatnya, "The Artist" mendapat nominasi untuk 4 dari 5 kategori utama Oscar, yaitu Best Picture, Directing, Best Actor in a Leading Role dan Original Screenplay. Nominasi yang lain adalah Actress in a Supporting Role, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Music (Original Score) dan Film Editing. Film lainnya, diantaranya "Moneyball" dan "War Horse" masing-masing 6 nominasi, sementara "The Descendants" yang pada Golden Globes waktu lalu menguasai dan "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" measing-masing dengan 6 nominasi. Tahun ini akan terjadi persiangan panas diantara para nominator Best Picture. Paling tidak ada 3 film yang paling berpeluang untuk menjadi yang terbaik tahun 2012 ini, yaitu "The Artist", "The Descesdants" dan "Hugo". Pada Golden Globes beberapa waktu lalu, posisi "The Artist" dan "The Descesdants"cukup aman, karena mereka dinimonasikan pada dunia ketegori berbeda dan masing-masing menang sebagai yang terbaik. Tetapi prediksi pemenang mengarah ke film "The Artist" karena pada malam minggu kemarin PGA Awards (Producer Guild Award) menganugrahkan "The Artist" sebagai film terbaik. Melihat dari hasil PGA Awards sebelumnya, seperti “The King's Speech," "The Hurt Locker,” dan “Slumdog Millionaire” yang pada akhirnya mendapat Best Picture prediksi ini cukup membahayakan "The Descesdants". "Hugo" sendiri, walaupun memimpin nominasi, kurang diprediksikan untuk menang Best Picture. Posisi "Hugo" mungkin akan sama seperti posisi "Avatar" tahun 2009 kemarin, dimana walaupun memimpin perolehan nominasi, tetapi hanya menang untuk kategori teknologi-teknologi perfilman. Untuk Best Picture sendiri ada film kejutan yang masuk nominasi, yaitu "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" dimana film ini harus bersaing dengan "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"dan "The Ides of March" yang pada waktu lalu masuk nominasi Golden Globes untuk film terbaik.
