A concerning trend has emerged within Indonesian society, known as "flexing." This term refers to the act of flaunting material possessions, wealth, and luxurious lifestyles on social media platforms. While flexing may seem like harmless self-expression for some people, it raises important questions about the stereotype of social inequality within Indonesian society.

Flexing in the context of poverty creates a sense of aspiration and desire for material wealth among those who are less fortunate. The display of luxury through social media can raise envyness, it can make worse social divides and holding a culture of comparison and discontent. It maintains a notion that material equals personal worth, further excluding those who cannot afford such status symbols.

Flexing influences the perception of success and happiness within Indonesian society. It establishes a restricted definition of achievement that revolves around material wealth and luxury. This can lead to misplaced priorities, as individuals may prioritize superficial gains over personal growth, education, or contributing to the society improvement. The pursuit of the need for validation through material possessions can disturb the development of meaningful relationships, personal fulfillment, and long-term well-being.

Individuals who engage in flexing bear a certain level of responsibility for the impact their actions have on society. While it is essential to recognize the rights of individuals to express themselves, it is equally crucial to consider the ethical implications. By show off wealth in a society struggling with poverty, individuals risk hold an environment that praise widens the socio-economic gap. They have a responsibility to be mindful of the potential consequences of their actions and to use their platforms to promote empathy, awareness, and positive change.

While some argue that flexing can be seen as a form of personal expression and empowerment, it is crucial to examine the underlying implications and potential harm it can cause within a society struggling with poverty. Encouraging empathy, social consciousness, and a reevaluation of the meaning of success can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society. Ultimately, the question remains: Should flexing be encouraged or discouraged? The answer lies in striking a balance between personal freedom and the collective responsibility to uplift those who are less fortunate.
