On Saturday October 25, 2023, a male Badak Sumatra (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) was born in the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary of Way Kambas National Park. This news brings happiness and hope because Badak Sumatra is an endangered species. Badak Sumatra are characterized by two short horns and rough skin. Weighing nearly 1 ton, this animal is known as one of the largest surviving mammals. Badak Sumatra are herbivores that feed on low plants such as grass, tree buds, and leaves. They are very protective of their territory and show authoritarian behavior if they feel threatened by humans or other animals. Unfortunately, Badak Sumatra are under serious threat due to habitat loss caused by continuous deforestation and illegal hunting. According to analysis, in 2016 the population was estimated to be no more than 100 individuals. Programs have been implemented by the government to try hard to protect this species such as natural habitat preservation, strict law enforcement against illegal poaching, and efforts to raise public awareness.
