Cases of Violence Against Students in Schools are Apparently Increasing

The rise of violence that occurs against students in schools has very fatal consequences, violence itself does not look at age, starting from young students such as elementary school students, they often become victims of violence that occurs in schools. Violence often occurs not only from fellow students, but sometimes teachers who are supposed to be parents in the school environment, actually participate in committing violence against their students, with the excuse of giving punishments that actually make their students suffer and even lose their lives. As in the news circulating recently about students who lost their lives as a result of punishment given by their teachers. It's not just physical violence, sexual violence often experienced by students is caused by uneducated teachers. There have been many cases of violence against students in schools, bullying against others is also very unfortunate, even just because of problems or things. Even small things can be the initial cause of bullying. 

Schools that should be a safe place to study and start friendships have instead become places where wounds form for weak victims of violence, places that should be able to educate students in the field of teaching and have good attitudes towards others have instead become places that are feared by some people who began to experience violence and bullying. This also of course refers to existing data, including; According to data released by the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) on March 8 2024, the KPAI Pusdatin stated that there were 35% of the 114 cases of violence that occurred in the Education Unit environment. There were also 46 cases of children ending their lives, 48% of which occurred in the Education Unit or child. The victim was still wearing a school uniform. The rate of violence against children in educational units continues to increase, this must be addressed seriously and move simultaneously to end violence against children in educational units. There is also data released by FSGI (Federation of Indonesian Teachers' Unions) uploaded by detik.com/detikEdu by Fahri Zulfikar on Tuesday, July 23 2024, that there were 15 cases of violence in educational units from January to July 2024. These cases were in the serious category and handled by the police. released data on violence in educational units throughout January-July 2024. Based on the data, it turns out that most violence occurs at the junior high school (SMP) level. Following is the data; SMP/MTs (40%), followed by SD/MI (33.33%), SMA (13.33%) and SMK (13.33%). From this data, 80% of schools that had cases were educational units under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Culture and Technology and 20% occurred in educational units under the authority of the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag). Even though school violence under the Ministry of Religion is only 20%, cases of physical violence that occurred resulted in the death of 2 students. As mentioned above, physical violence and sexual violence by teachers is also the highest level of violence according to the Secretary General of FSGI, Heru Purnomo and Chair of the FSGI Expert Council, Retno Listyarti.

Meanwhile physical violence reached 73.33%. The majority of the perpetrators of physical violence were students, both peers and seniors, and 5 victims died. Therefore, there is clear data regarding the prevalence of violence that occurs in the school environment. So how can violence in schools be reduced or even avoided? The answer is that it can start from teachers who should be more firm in dealing with cases of bullying that occur in schools, and teachers should also be more educated and not be lighthearted, let alone doing things they shouldn't do to their students. Students also have to be more careful and choose friends who will not bring us into bad influence. If something undesirable happens, they have to be braver in being open and willing to tell about it so that the violence that occurs can be dealt with immediately until it is resolved.
