Â
we started a live-in experience in a village located at the foot of a mountain, named Mai Thia. This village not only offers breathtaking natural beauty but also provides a valuable lesson about the deep connection between humans and nature. The people in this village are part of an indigenous community that lives in harmony and peace. They have traditions and values deeply rooted in honoring nature and the invisible forces they believe protect their lives. One of the most fascinating things we witnessed was how they perform rituals to honor the guardians of the forest and mountain, whom they believe are spirits that maintain the balance of nature. For them, the forest is not just a place that provides natural resources, but also a home for spirits that give life. They believe that the forest and the source of the river are living entities, holding spiritual power that nurtures and sustains their community. Every year, the people of Mai Tia carry out a special ceremony to show their gratitude and respect to the spirits of the forest and mountain. In this ceremony, they offer food, flowers, and sacred items.Â
They believe that by maintaining a good relationship with these spirits, they will be blessed with abundant natural resources and protected from natural disasters. We were deeply moved by the peace in this village. They don't only respect nature but also strive to live according to the principle of balance, which flows through every aspect of their lives. In many ways, their way of life reflects teachings from Buddhism, which emphasizes the importance of harmony between humans, nature, and all other beings. In Buddhist teachings, especially in the concept of interbeing or paticcasamuppada (dependent origination), all living beings and the universe are interconnected and influence each other. This teaches us to maintain loving and respectful relationships with all living beings, as they all play a role in the larger ecosystem.Â
This reflects basic values in Buddhist teachings, which encourage us to live with mindfulness, appreciate every moment, and consider the well-being of all. In conclusion, our journey to Mai Thia taught us a valuable lesson about the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature. These people not only preserve their environment, but also embody spiritual values that teach us to live in harmony with the universe, just as Buddhism encourages.
