One of the biggest and most expensive British ocean liners, Titanic, sank into the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.
The 2,200 passengers and staff members aboard that huge ship had clashed with an iceberg. At 2:20 a.m., two and a half hours later, the ship fell into the North Atlantic's depths.
More than 1,500 people drowned in the sinking ship as a result of that disaster. Around 700 of them high class women and children survived, although a few of them drowned from contact to the icy North Atlantic sea. Unfortunately, there weren't many more lifeboats or effective emergency protocols on board that huge, luxurious ship, which meant that more than half of the passengers and crew were dead.
After James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic, which was based on that tragedy, it gained popularity once more. A fictional story about people from different social classes who met on the ship and fell in love was used as the basis for the Titanic disaster movie.
