Homework have been part of the educational system for over the years. However, overtime, the amount of homework given to students has become overwhelming, resulting in less effective learning outcomes. As a student myself, I personally think that the amount of homework given to students should be reduced. There are several reasons why students should have less homework.
Firstly, the impact of too much homework on student's mental health cannot be ignored. The pressure to complete numerous assignments can cause stress and anxiety, which can disrupt their sleep and cause fatigue. As we know, maintaining student's mental health is crucial to ensure they achieve the best learning outcomes. A study published in the journal of educational psychology by Cooper, Robinson, and Patall (2007) found a positive correlation between homework load and students stress levels. Students with higher homework reported increased anxiety and depression. This highlights the importance of finding a balance between academic rigor and students well-being. If student's mental health is poor, they will struggle to keep up with learning activity, they will not be able to focus during the learning process, and it can affect the quality of their learning outcomes. So, my point is that, by reducing the amount of homework can help reduce stress and improve student's mental well-being.
Secondly, a research review by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) concluded that there is no clear evidence that homework improves academic achievement. On the other hand, excessive homework can lead fatigue and boredom, which reduces motivation and interest in learning. By assigning less but higher quality homework, teachers can ensure that students truly understand the material and remain interested in learning. Focusing on quality over quantity will result in more effective and sustainable learning outcomes.
Third, too much homework can reduce student's time to rest and do other activities such as family gatherings or to participate in extracurricular activities that is crucial for student's development. If students have less homework, they will have more time to explore their interests, interact with friends and family, and rest, all of which contribute to the formation of a balance and a healthy person.
In conclusion, reducing the amount of homework given to students has many benefits. With less homework, there will be less pressure, so students can enjoy their time in the learning process more, students can have a better mental health, have a more effective learning experience, and have more balance time for other activities. Therefore, it is time for our education system to consider a better learning program that is more effectives and efficient, prioritize student's well-being and development.
