In general, Islamic thought and Abdurrahman Wahid's plurality began with understanding
to Islam, the point is that all the celestial treatises revealed are called Islam, which is
in the general sense means complete surrender or complete submission to commands
God. While Islam which is used in a specific meaning refers to the latest version of Islam
which was brought by the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w .. However, it needs to be emphasized here that in faith
Wahid, Islam revealed to Muhammad s.a.w. is the best. Islam that is
meant by Wahid is an understanding or insight into Islam that is open, flexible, and tolerant.
Open means that Islam provides opportunities for humans to criticize it,
if the truth or wisdom is conveyed, then a Muslim must be tolerant
to receive it, from who or whatever it comes from. Flexible means to connect with
the other party, without feeling awkward, and also without seeing the differences that exist, both religion,
trust, and origin. Tolerant means respecting existing differences, both with
who are of the same religion or belief as well as those with different religions or beliefs. Understanding
thus starting from the basic values of Islam, with the main idea "Islam as a teaching
compassion for the world "(rahmatan lil 'alamin). Implications of Islamic thought and plurality
is the courage to dismantle a dull veil in the form of a world of appreciation of Islam
doctrinal and opinionated. Understanding and implementing more emphasis on value
the basis of Islam, not mere symbols. Excessive emphasis or trap on
religious symbols actually contain the danger of contraction, distortion, and reduction of religious teachings
itself, the spirit of emphasis on religious symbols is often incompatible
the substance of religious teachings themselves.
