Cancer, a formidable adversary that has plagued humanity for centuries, remains one of the most complex and challenging diseases to understand. The journey from a healthy cell to a malignant tumor involves a series of intricate events that researchers have been tirelessly unraveling. In this article, we delve into the fundamental question: How does cancer start?

1. Normal Cell Division: The Beginning of Life:

The human body is a marvel of organization, with trillions of cells working harmoniously. The process of life begins with cell division, ensuring growth, repair, and maintenance. However, this seemingly mundane process can take a dark turn when errors occur.

2. Genetic Mutations: Seeds of Disruption:

At the heart of cancer initiation are genetic mutations. These alterations in the DNA sequence can be caused by various factors, including exposure to carcinogens, genetic predispositions, or even errors during DNA replication. Mutations can lead to the activation of oncogenes (genes that promote cell growth) or the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes (genes that prevent excessive cell growth).

3. Initiation of Oncogenesis: The Birth of a Cancer Cell:

When a normal cell acquires a combination of specific mutations, it undergoes a transformation into a cancer cell. This process is known as oncogenesis. The altered cell gains the ability to evade normal growth controls and continues to divide uncontrollably, forming the foundation of a potential tumor.

4. Angiogenesis: Fueling the Fire:

As the cancer cell population grows, it requires a blood supply to sustain itself. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, becomes a critical step in cancer progression. Tumors release signals that stimulate the growth of blood vessels, providing the malignant cells with essential nutrients and oxygen.

5. Invasion and Metastasis: The Menace Spreads:

Cancer's lethality lies not only in its primary site but in its ability to invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant organs. Cancer cells can break away from the original tumor, enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, and establish secondary colonies in other parts of the body.
