We've just come through the "red carpet" season, where beautiful celebrities show off their attributes in hopes of boosting profits both for themselves and the studios. Here in the U.S., we are just about to launch an outrageously expensive promotion of political stars meant to capture another kind of vote — that for the ultimate political leader. Is it also a theatrical exercise? You bet. Rather than ticket sales, these celebrities are seeking votes. They are betting that their powers of attraction will result in ballot box initiatives cast their way. Since modern presidential personalities are sold purely through the media, they have to accept that they are actors on their own red carpet. Drawing people to you and compelling them to follow you as their leader is not just the exclusive reserve of actors and politicians. Business leaders, student leaders, academic deans, inventors, fundraisers, motivators, innovators, sales people, trainers, coaches — all have to persuade people to support and follow them. The power of attraction, though often not understood, is always at work. Honesty, integrity, and humanity are more than campaign buzzwords or traits to check off in a webinar. The leader must embody them before they can be discerned by the follower. Haven’t you ever heard someone say “I am not sure what it is, but I just don’t trust that guy”? To determine what constitutes the likeability of a leader is the toughest thing to do. It could stem simply from the way a person stands, walks, talks, their facial gestures, the tone of their voice. Can you buy likeability? Probably not. We do know enough about it to agree that it comes from character. It starts there with highly developed self-knowledge, self-confidence, personal security, self-worth, and a sufficient lack of hubris or arrogance. These last two are the enemies of likeability. 2. Credibility People want to know that their leaders will deliver. Promises are hollow. Results speak for themselves — or at least can be told with reliability. Credibility stems from what people perceive the leader has been able to achieve already and the ability of the leader to convince the crowd that he or she will be able to perform again in the future. The leader must build a bridge between past actions and future tasks. The follower has to be convinced that the leader can successfully cross this bridge. Transparency and candor fuel credibility. If the crowd perceives that something is being withheld, or if the media discovers something, credibility suffers. While this is especially true of those running for public office, people in private management or in publically controlled and regulated industries cannot escape scrutiny. Is there such a thing as a private life anymore? If you can live an exposed life with accomplishment and believability you are attractive because of your credibility. 3. Confidence One of the strongest components of the law of attraction is confidence. The confident among us are the most compelling. The weak and doubting usually don’t stand a chance of filling leadership roles. Then, as a teenage entrepreneur, I had to convince people to have enough confidence in my leadership that they would hire me despite my youth. I am not sure I grasped the powers of attraction back then, but after having worked, years later, in Washington and in Hollywood, I can better understand the basics of it. For the leader looking to draw support for their management objectives, political platforms, ideas, or votes, here are three elements of attraction that are basic to the purposes of leadership. 1. Likeability The personality of the leader is often inseparable from the campaign platform or management objectives they are promoting. There is a likeability quotient, and if you don’t have enough of it, you can’t engender sufficient trust to get people to draw close to you, listen intently, and follow what you ask them to do. People want their leaders to be like them, but different at the same time. They want to feel that if they lived down the street from this person, they would be friends. But there is one last subtle element that has to be added to confidence today more than ever — and that is the drive, the passion, and the need to succeed. Confidence as a trait by itself can be perceived as arrogance. When you have the drive to succeed, you add vulnerability and texture to the mixture. People are attracted to those who are vulnerable — especially those who admit it. To be smart, accomplished, and confident is not enough. To have the urgent need to lead exposes an internal force that is compelling to the crowd. See more at bridesmaid dresses australia
