Abstract
This article explores the dual effects of social media on mental health, focusing on both positive and negative implications. Social media platforms have transformed communication and interaction globally, providing opportunities for social connection and support. However, excessive use and harmful interactions are linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and stress. This study synthesizes findings from recent research to provide an overview of these impacts and suggests interventions to mitigate risks while enhancing benefits.
Introduction
Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of users worldwide. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook enable instant communication and provide access to diverse communities. While these platforms can foster social bonds and support networks, they also present risks, including cyberbullying, social comparison, and addiction. The rise in mental health disorders, particularly among adolescents and young adults, has been partially attributed to the increasing prevalence of social media use, highlighting the importance of understanding its effects on mental well-being.
Discussion
A. Positive Impacts
Social media can promote mental well-being by:
Providing access to peer support and communities for individuals with shared experiences (e.g., chronic illness or mental health challenges).
Facilitating mental health awareness campaigns and access to resources.
Strengthening social connections and reducing loneliness for geographically isolated individuals.
