In April 2024, Indonesia's National Police Public Relations Division held a strategy meeting in Surabaya. The theme focused on their role in supporting security and stability during the upcoming elections and economic transformation. The Head of Public Relations, Inspector General Dr. Sandi Nugroho, emphasized the importance of collaboration. He acknowledged the groundwork laid by previous leadership and expressed gratitude for the support that allows Public Relations to function effectively at all levels.

While attending this meeting, several regional Public Relations heads were absent due to pressing matters, highlighting the diverse situations they manage. These included monitoring a court case, responding to a natural disaster, a presidential visit, and a potential security threat.

Nugroho went beyond traditional public speaking, emphasizing the strategic role of Public Relations. They act as the "front guard" for the National Police, managing information and promoting positive actions. This builds public trust, strengthens the institution's reputation, and fosters a positive brand image. Public trust, he argued, is crucial for maintaining security and order. It prevents frustration and potential social unrest. Nugroho stressed the importance of Public Relations being present at all stages of community activities, from initiation to completion.

Maintaining trust is an ongoing process. Public Relations serves as the "showcase" for the police, ensuring transparency and accountability in routine and special events. Nugroho acknowledged the need to move beyond traditional methods. He highlighted the challenges presented by social media and online media, which require a more tech-savvy approach.

Fortunately, the National Police Chief has provided valuable tools. Perkap no. 6 of 2023 establishes guidelines for police public relations, and a dedicated application serves as a central hub for police services. This platform aims to integrate information and foster public participation. Recognizing the tech-savvy nature of younger generations, Nugroho envisions features that allow citizens to contribute as "citizen journalists," supporting the Public Relations mission.

In essence, the National Police Public Relations Division is committed to building public trust through transparency, engagement, and adapting to the evolving media landscape. Their efforts aim to ensure the police remain a respected and trusted institution within Indonesian society.
