Shadow puppetry is a traditional performing art form that has become an integral part of Javanese culture. This art is not just entertainment but also has an important role in people's lives, especially in the context of political thought. In the Muslim-majority Javanese society, shadow puppetry is an effective medium to convey moral messages, ethics, and religious teachings in an interesting and easy-to-understand way. In modernization, the relevance of traditional values through shadow puppets is important to maintain cultural sustainability while integrating teachings that are relevant to the times, including Islamic political thought.

Shadow puppetry has great potential as an educational medium that can convey Islamic political values to the community. The stories in shadow puppets often contain strong moral messages, and the characters can symbolize Islamic political principles. Puppet shows often contain stories that contain lessons about life, politics, and culture. In the context of Islamic political thought, shadow puppets can be used to teach concepts of democracy, leadership, and citizens' rights. For example, the characters in Shadow Puppetry often represent characters and traits in the political world, so the audience can take lessons about political dynamics and the importance of integrity in leadership.

In addition, shadow puppets also function as a social reflection, depicting the realities and issues that occur in society. Shadow Puppets shows are often a means to convey social criticism indirectly. Puppeteers use Shadow Puppetry stories to comment on the social, economic, and political conditions that occur in society. In this way, shadow puppets become a mirror for people to see and reflect on their situation, and find solutions to existing problems.

In the context of globalization and modernization, maintaining the relevance of shadow puppetry as a tool of education and social reflection has become increasingly important. Shadow puppetry not only preserves cultural heritage but also adapts to the times to remain an effective medium for conveying important messages to society. In the majority of shadow puppet stories, protagonists such as Arjuna and Yudistira are often portrayed as just and wise leaders. They strive to uphold justice and protect the weak, which is in line with the principles of justice in Islamic politics.

The characters in shadow puppets who are considered ideal usually have trustworthy traits. For example, Rama in the Ramayana is portrayed as an honest and responsible king, reflecting the traits of a mandated leader in Islam. The process of decision-making through consultation can also be found in shadow puppet stories. Kings or leaders are often depicted consulting with their advisors or subjects before making important decisions, reflecting the practice of shura in Islam.

Many shadow puppet stories are about the struggle against tyranny and oppression. For example, the story of Bharatayudha in the Mahabharata depicts the war between the Pandavas who represent righteousness and the Kuravas who represent injustice. This is in line with Islamic teachings on the importance of resisting injustice and fighting for truth.

By integrating values such as justice, trust, shura, and the fight against injustice, shadow puppetry can not only maintain its relevance but also make a positive contribution to Islamic political thought and the morals of society. Thus, shadow puppet shows are not only a means of entertainment but also a medium to convey moral and political messages that align with Islamic political thought. This shows how local culture can adapt and integrate with religious values, creating a rich and meaningful art form.
